Urban Dare Honolulu runs Saturday, January 14. We will kickoff at Noon at Ala Moana Beach Park. We will start the race on Ala Moana Park Drive towards the end of the park nearest to Waikiki across from the concession stand. Look for the blue Urban Dare shirts.

Race-day check-in will begin at 10:00am and we will be taking registration up to the start of the race.

This year we are relaxing our rule on having to wear Urban Dare shirts. If you have team costumes/uniforms, you may wear those. Otherwise, you must wear the Urban Dare shirts, which you will receive at check-in. We will have a $50 prize for the best costume.

You should bring a cell phone and a digital camera to show your pictures at the end of the race. A cell phone camera will work. Maps are also handy and you should have someone to call to help look up clues. I also recommend a pen or pencil to take notes.

Congratulations go to Cherylynn Schilling and Stephanie Schilling for winning in a time of 1:15:13. Urban Dare is deeply saddened that they will not be able to compete in our Championship Race next June in Milwaukee. Something about a teaching gig in China that will stop them from a chance at Adventure Racing immortality. Priorities are not in order, it appears.

Second place went to Marla Johnson and Gibson Gilmore, and third place honors went to Scott White and Kimberly Duncan. Kudos to our first Family winners of Ryan Spence and Jamie Spence who wielded a carriage plus a 2 and 5 year old who were real troopers.

Apparently there were some sailors in town who helped teams re-enact the famous WWII sailor/nurse Times Square kissing photograph. Next race there will be a bonus for that.

Urban Dare Lexington Top 5 Finishers

It was a real hot day out there today and I am really impressed with the racers from Lexington with all but two out of 59 race teams finishing.

Our winning team was David Kluedig and David Tweedie with a time of 1:23. It could have been the shortest winning time of the year if I did not have to send them back out to complete a task.

2nd place went to Sarah Sjuts and Nathan Schwake with 3rd place honors going to Kyle Hagan and Susanna Bowsher.

Super Dare - March 12 & 13 - $5000 Prize

Super Dare will take place in Pasadena, CA on March 12 & 13. Super Dare is a 2-day fun-filled challenge. Beginning at Noon Saturday, we will provide a variety of mental, physical, and just plain mess with you challenges. The awards ceremony will be on Sunday afternoon where the winner will receive $5,000.

Super Dare will be a 3-stager race. Saturday will feature a trivia quiz and an Urban Dare style obstacle course complete with puzzles and other challenges. the final stage on Sunday will have a race format similar to a regular Urban Dare.

The awards ceremony and presentation of the $5,000 check will take place at 3:00pm on Sunday.

All teams that finished in the top 5 in 2010 Urban Dare races are automatic qualifiers for Super Dare. Automatic qualifiers must still register. You should click on Super Dare and use the comp code - top5 - when you register. The price for all other teams is $100 per person. We look forward to hosting a 2-day event.

I learned a long time ago that sometimes there is more than one correct answer to a clue. When I designed the race I found the POW/MIA Memorial in front of the county courthouse downtown, and the Love Shack on 7th Street about 5 blocks from the start. Most teams went to these two locations. Others went to the POW/MIA Memorial at the Botanic Gardens, and some went to the Love Shack near the stockyards. These were also correct, but it lengthened the race.

Urban Dare Pacific Beach by Bike runs Saturday, August 7. We will kickoff at Noon. The race will start and finish at Kate Sessions Park. Race-day check-in will begin at 11:00am and we will be taking registration up to the start of the race.

We look forward to hosting our first bicycle race. We will have hot dogs and beverages at the finish.

You should bring a cell phone and a digital camera to show your pictures at the end of the race. A cell phone camera will work. Maps are also handy and you should have someone to call to help look up clues. I also recommend a pen or pencil to take notes.

Congratulations to Gary & Kelly Black, a father-daughter team, who now reign as Urban Dare San Jose Champions.

Kevin Moul & Keith Devey placed second.

Bonuses came into play for third place. Stephen McMahon & Bill Saunders were the third team to finish, but were passed with a five minute bonus by Jane Shinn & Adam Burger.

Here was the clue that caused a good deal of separation in the race:

The USS Minneapolis served in the Pacific theater of operations during World War II, and fought in many of the major sea battles. Get your picture with a bell for the USS Minneapolis.

As it turns out, there happens to be 2 USS Minneapolis bells in the metropolitan area. The one from the ship that served in WWII is located downtown next to the convention center. The other bell is located on the northeastern shore of Lake Calhoun, a good distance away from all the other checkpoints. The ship it comes from, also the USS MInneapolis, was commissioned in 1896 and decomissioned in 1921.

I learned a long time ago that some clues have more than one correct answer. That was the case with this clue:
